VICTORIAN 1837 - 1900

Mid-Victorian

As mass production of materials increased, and transport networks expanded, the building styles popular in Dublin and London filtered out to other towns and cities. The wealthy were keen to keep up with the latest trends and the designs for both the terraces and suburban villas borrowed details from each passing phase.

As the manufacture of brick increased, polychrome bricks became popular – reds, yellows and blues were all used. In addition special ornate bricks for decoration and moulded terracotta panels were produced to add interest to facades. Timber elements, such as bargeboards, were carved and scrolled. The widespread availability of plate glass led to the removal of glazing bars from sash windows and horns were introduced to provide the stability lost when they were removed. The manufacture of cast and wrought iron allowed railings, gates and door furniture to become more decorative.
