Direct-Entry Houses

These houses were constructed with the entrance door, which was diagonally opposite the hearth, opening directly into the kitchen.

Outshots

In many areas in the north and west of Ireland, the bed outshot is a common feature. This was a box -like projection, usually to the rear of the dwelling, housing a bed near the kitchen hearth. A shallow bed outshot meant that much of the bed protruded into the kitchen floor area, but many outshots were deep enough to accommodate the bed entirely.
