VERNACULAR 1700 - Present

Vernacular architecture is the traditional indigenous architecture of an area. Vernacular buildings are characterised by their plainness, the simplicity of their layout and the use of local materials and building methods. These characteristics were taken up by architects in the late eighteenth century and later, by the Arts and Crafts movement, in an attempt to recreate an idealised image of the countryside.
