Case Study
Springhill, County Londonderry

Springhill was the home of a Scottish plantation family called Conyngham who came to Ireland from Ayrshire in 1609. The house was probably built about 1680 and was originally T-plan and two-storey. In 1780 two single storey pavilions were built on either side and in 1820 a dining room was added.
On approaching the front of the house there are two long single storey buildings on either side which may occupy the site of the former bawn.

In 1957 Captain William Lenox-Conyngham left the property to the National Trust in his will.
This house which has been occupied for over 300 years has been adapted through time by its owners. These changes have enabled it to remain in use; it has a range of outbuildings which have been adapted for educational and public use. The house is open to the public and has an interesting costume collection in the former laundry.
