Definitions
The
definitions given are only simple brief descriptions of the styles of
architecture found in the seventeenth century. The ‘Booklist’
gives details of books which cover the architectural styles in more depth.
Plantation
The settlements erected by ‘Planters’ usually consisting of
a large fortified house and walled enclosure protected by flankers. The
main buildings and walls were constructed in stone; the style of some
settlements was a curious mix of English and Scottish building traditions.
Early maps show that ordinary people lived in stone houses with brick
chimneys and slated roofs, timber-framed houses or thatched cottages.

Renaissance
The word is derived from the French ‘to be born again’ and
the Italian word for ‘rebirth’.
Classical
The term comes from a great revival of the arts, influenced by classical
precedents, which emerged from Italy in the fourteenth century.
