Case Study

Bendhu, County Antrim

Explore the history of this house and what the future holds for it.

location
Bendhu is sited above the picturesque harbour at Ballintoy.

the house
The house was designed and built by Newton Penprase, a lecturer at the College of Art in Belfast. He started building the house in 1936 and forty years later work ceased after an accident on site. Penprase constructed it in concrete, undertaking all building skills himself. The current owner bought the house in 1994 and set about completing Penprase’s design.

restoration
The house was taken back to its original structure, waterproofing the walls and roof and repairing the structure as necessary. New lead flashings were installed while the existing single glazed frameless windows were retained and repaired. Thermal insulation was applied to the internal face of all external walls. The original spatial quality of the house was kept and renovation of the existing features such as the panelling and murals to the ceilings were carefully carried out.
