MODERN 1900 - 1950

By the beginning of the twentieth century, there was a wide range of styles for architects to follow. Some continued to use Georgian or Victorian styles while others experimented with trends more prevalent in Europe; styles which included Art Nouveau (c.1895-1914) and Art Deco (c.1925-40). Society changed after the First World War (1914-1918 war). In Ireland, as well as the loss of life in WW1, there was civil unrest which culminated in the partition of Ireland in 1922. In Ulster this meant that new public buildings were required, these were mainly in a conservative Neo-Georgian style.
