Listing

Why is a building listed? Environment and Heritage Service: Protecting Historic Buildings is the part of government that determines whether a building is eligible for listing. A range of criteria including the age of the building, its architectural style and whether it has historic interest is used as a basis for every building being considered. Listing began over thirty years ago and the list is currently being revised and updated. Once a building is listed, it is afforded statutory protection under Article 42 of the Planning (Northern Ireland) Order 1991 against demolition or inappropriate alterations that could detract from its special architectural or historic character. The listing applies to the whole building, interior and exterior.

Listed buildings are graded to demonstrate their relative importance within the built heritage of Northern Ireland. Buildings can range from internationally important listed as Grade A, through B+, and B1 with buildings of local importance listed as B2.
The listing criteria and categories are set out and explained on the Environment and Heritage Service website. www.ehsni.gov.uk/built/buildings/listing.shtml

To alter a listed building you need to apply for listed building consent. This ensures that work carried out to a listed building is appropriate for the building and is of the highest quality. Working with the architects in Environment and Heritage Service: Protecting Historic Buildings will help you to achieve an acceptable design for a sympathetic alteration or extension allowing your building to be successfully re-used for many years to come. Applications for listed building consent should be made through your Divisional Planning Office. Please remember that it is an offence to alter a listed building without consent. Like for like repairs, using traditional materials and approved detailing do not need listed building consent but if you have any queries about the work you want to do contact Environment and Heritage Service at the address below:
